    Some Facts about Barèges

    A commune in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in southwestern France, Bareges is situated in the valley of the Bastan on the former Route nationale 618, the "Route of the Pyrénées," on the western side of the Col du Tourmalet. Its warm sulphurous waters first became generally known in 1675 when they were visited by Madame de Maintenon and the duke of Maine, son of Louis XIV. A military hospital was founded in 1760. Barèges is situated at the perimeter of the National Parc of the Pyrénées and in and around the village all mountain sports are practiced, such as paragliding, walking, cycling, canyoning/caving, mountain climbing, mountain biking, and more.

    Barèges is also the second oldest ski resort in France, and when the funicular was opened in 1936 the resort became a tourist destination. The resort, now linked with La Mongie, is the largest ski area in the French Pyrénées. The light silk and wool fabric called barège takes its name from the place, where it was first made.

    Barèges has 120km of piste and altitudes ranging from 1250m to 2350m above sea level. This resort is part of the Tourmalet ski area with access to 138 individual pistes, served by 43 ski lifts. In addition to the skiing in Barèges itself (120km of pisted ski runs), the ski Lift Pass will allow you to ski or snowboard in the other Tourmalet ski resorts of La Mongie. Barèges is directly linked by Ski Lift to the ski areas of La Mongie. With skiing above 2000 meters, snow cover is generally reliable.

    There are three Airports within two hours drive, so ski weekends, snowboard breaks and short ski holidays to Barèges are perfectly feasible. Lourdes Airport is just one hours drive away, in good driving conditions, so you can be on the piste quickly.

    Is there public transport to Barèges?

    There are shuttle bus twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays from Tarbes–Lourdes airport. From other airports journey to Barèges is tricky, expensive and takes a long time as there are no public transportation links.

    Without the availability of a direct public transportation links getting to and from Barèges is tiresome and takes time. We recommend airport transfers as the best way.
